after 52 day Hunger Strike

Yahya Mohamed Elhafed at the Edge of Death
On Wednesday, May 20th, 2009, Ait Melloul prison administration started a dialogue with the Sahrawi human rights defender, and therefore, he suspended his hunger strike. However, the prison administration received an order to cancel all the promises the day later.
Yahya was put again in solitary confinement and was denied all his rights, including the family visits. When his blind 82-year-old father and 70-year-old mother came to visit him, the prison director insulted them and threatened to knock them over with his car.
Therefore, Yahya had to resume his hunger strike as soon as he was put in solitary confinement again. His health has continued to deteriorate rapidly.
On Thursday, May 26th, 2009, at 14.00, Yahya was taken to Hassan II Hospital again in Agadir, where he spent two hours before the doctor in charge warned about his critical state, and took him to the intensive care unit (réanimation).
Yahya is handcuffed with the hospital bed and strictly guarded by six police agents in Room 2, Bloc 2 in Hasan II Hospital. He was forced to use the SERUM injection.
All the Sahrawi university students and representatives of the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (Hammoud Iguilid and Mohamed Chaikh Elkhoumani) as well as prominent Sahrawi human rights defnders, who came to see Yahya in the hospital, were all denied the visit.
Only his mother and his wife could see him for one minute, after which Mahjouba Ailla, his wife, lost consciousness, for the critical state Yahya has reached. She has said that he has become like a skeleton and has completely changed.

As far as the other Sahrawi hunger strikers are concerned, Hassan Khallad lost consciousness today after a two week suffering with respiratory troubles, asthma and extreme fatigue because of the hunger strike. He was taken to the prison medical cabinet with a flood of insults, his family says.

Both Mohamed Elbarkaoui and Lahcen Lafquir's health state is alarming, since they are now suffering from heart troubles, haemorrhoids, stomachaches and rheumatism.
